Climate Change considerations to ISO’s Management Systems Standards

Climate change is an ever-growing topic and ISO has joined in on the party. In case you haven't heard the news already, two additional statements will be added to the Management System Standards due to the resolution ISO has passed. These new statements were set to publish by February 23rd, 2024 and will be incorporated into the text in: Appendix 2 of the Annex SL in the ISO/IEC Directives Part 1 Consolidated ISO Supplement. The two new statements are stated below.

1.      The organization shall determine whether climate change is a relevant issue.

2.      NOTE: Relevant interested parties can have requirements related to climate change.

As ISO states on the Intent of the changes:” The intent is to ensure that Climate Change issues are considered by the organization in the context of the effectiveness of the management system, in addition to all other issues. These additional statements in each management system standard are ensuring that this important topic is not overlooked but considered by all organizations in the design and implementation of the management system.”

The two new changes are important to be aware of because they must be consistently introduced and implemented by the organization. Climate change is becoming a more popular topic, and it is crucial for organizations to do their part. It is valuable to see the importance of Climate Change to ISO and these new two statements are a great step in the right direction. Hopefully further changes are to come and can spread the importance of Climate Change and the organization.
