Determining requirements for products and services

Organizations must identify and understand:

·       Legal and regulatory requirements

·       Customer specifications

·       Internal quality objectives

·       Applicable industry standards

Establishing controls to achieve conformity

Controls should be implemented at various stages of the process to ensure consistency. These include:

1.      Process Standardization: Using procedures, work instructions, and quality plans.

2.      Error Prevention: Implementing mistake-proofing techniques.

3.      Monitoring and Measuring: Checking key performance indicators (KPIs) to verify compliance.

4.      Use of Resources: Ensuring adequate manpower, tools, and equipment.

Managing risks and opportunities

As Clause 6.1 – Actions to Address Risks and Opportunities also requires organizations to:

1.      Identify risks that may impact product/ service quality.

2.      Implement mitigation strategies (eg., training, process improvement)

3.      Recognize opportunities to enhance efficiency and performance.

Controlling external providers and processes

When outsourcing activities such as suppliers and contractors, organizations must:

1.      Define and communicate quality expectations.

2.      Monitor external providers’ performance.

3.      Ensure their outputs conform to organizational and customer requirements.

Establishing documented information

In 8.1 it is crucial that organizations must maintain documented information to:

1.      Demonstrate process control and effectiveness.

2.      Provide evidence of conformity to requirements.

3.      Ensure traceability and accountability in operations.

Managing process changes

Whenever there are modifications in:

1.      Methods of production/ service delivery

3.      Regulatory requirements or customer needs

In conclusion, implementing Clause 8.1 Operational planning and control ensures that organizations take a structured, risk-based approach to managing operations. It focuses on planning, process control, risk management, supplier oversight, documentation and change control to consistently deliver high-quality products and services. In the next blog post we will be diving deeper into Clause 8.2 - Requirements for products and services
