RIOS is the Recycling Industry Operating Standard: quality, environmental and health & safety in one recycling-specific management system. For some recyclers it's the better foundation. For others ISO 9001 is. Here's how to tell.
RIOS combines quality, environmental and occupational health & safety requirements into a single management system built specifically for the recycling industry. Where ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 are three general standards you integrate yourself, RIOS arrives already integrated and written in the language of scrap, waste and recycling operations.
The decision usually comes down to one question: is recycling what you do, or one of several things you do? A dedicated recycler generally finds RIOS a better fit. An organization spanning multiple industries generally finds ISO more useful, because it travels.

How it connects to R2
RIOS can satisfy the R2v3 quality prerequisite
Appendix C (test and repair) and Appendix F (brokering) both require a certified quality management system underneath your R2v3 certification. RIOS satisfies that requirement, and so does ISO 9001.
For a recycler who needs the quality system purely to support R2v3 and has no other reason for ISO 9001, RIOS often makes more sense. It covers the environmental and safety ground at the same time, in one audit, in language that matches your operation.

Common questions
Is RIOS as recognised as ISO 9001?
Within the recycling industry, yes — and some buyers, particularly OEMs and mills, ask for it specifically. Outside recycling, ISO 9001 has far broader recognition. That's the real trade-off: industry fit versus portability.
Can RIOS replace ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 too?
RIOS covers quality, environmental and health & safety in one system, which is its main appeal. Whether it satisfies a specific customer requirement or the R2v3 prerequisites depends on SERI's accepted standards list and on what your customer actually asked for — worth confirming in writing rather than assuming.
We need a QMS for R2v3 Appendix C. Which is cheaper?
Usually RIOS, if recycling is all you do, because you get the environmental and safety coverage in the same system and the same audit. If you already hold ISO 14001, adding ISO 9001 may be less work. It genuinely depends on what you already have.
Do you implement both?
Yes, both RIOS and the ISO standards. We have no commercial reason to push you toward either, and we're independent of the certification bodies that would audit you for them.
